READING / LISTENING
The following are FREE reading and listening resources.

For some reading exercises I have developed, go to my Quia page:

Dictionary for beginning level students. It has picture and audio. Topics include family, animals, plants, food, the body, clothing, etc

Don't let this site's name fool you! It is a good resource for students to practice main ideas, identifying cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, frame of reference, point of view, etc. It has two levels of difficulty. Students can also practice reading maps and analyzing graphic data.

It is a free web-based multimedia resource for adult education.  Students can watch videos, listen to audio, read and then do a variety of exercises covering life skills as well as grammar, listening and vocabulary and reading comprehension. Materials can also be printed.

An entertaining game from the BBC in China. You’re shown a sentence with a word missing. Then you have to click on an on-screen keyboard to type the correct word (just like “hangman”)  It has various levels of difficulty. After you’ve either guessed the correct word or the timer is up, you can have the sentence read to you.

Students can click on a word and see a corresponding picture and the click on audio and hear the word pronounce. Students also are presented with sentences in which the word is used.

Visuwords is an online "graphical" dictionary. It presents a unique, and fun way to find synonyms in a visual display. It’s free, and it also functions as a dictionary. According to their site: "when you type a word into the search query at the top of the page and press 'Enter',  a network of nodes or 'synsets' will spring out from the word that you entered. For example when you lookup "seem", you see that the word is connected to four synsets each represented by a green circle. Green denotes verbs so all of these synsets represent verbs. Two of these synsets have the lone word "seem"; one has two terms: "appear" and "seem"; and the third has three terms: "look", "appear" and "seem". Each of the four synsets has its own definition. Hovering over a node with the mouse will reveal all of the synonyms for a given synset as well as its definition." Below is an example:
